Apex Apartments is an adaptive reuse project of St. Mary’s Church located on 196 3rd Street, Troy, New York. The sanctuary of the church has been completely reimaged. Replacing the original wooden roof and rafters with a glass case brings natural light into the space. A U-shaped mezzanine overlooks the lower gallery space. The entire space has been plated in chrome like a coat of arms. Brightly-colored contemporary art is placed in the gallery to simulate reflections.
The façade of the housing is composed of the pointed arch profile that is prevalent throughout the existing church. The profile was manipulated to create a skeleton for the housing that relates back to the secondary program below. Within each façade of the building the pointed arch profiles meet at corners, creating a unique shape that is highlighted with chrome material, drawing attention from afar.
